Encrypted Flarmnet files and 3rd party software by jfitch
I think this merits its own thread. Due to legal concerns, Flarmnet has encrypted their files, and as I understand it most displays including the Butterfly will no longer show pilot or glider information. This is separate from the opt in/out of tracking as I understand it. I liked the ability to...

Collision Avoidance Systems for gliders by noel56z
After reading of the recent mid-air out West I bought a Zaon MRX PCAS (Portable Collision Avoidance System) from Aircraft Spruce & Speciality to try out. I also fly a Piper Vagabond without an electrical system and this unit doesn't require your aircraft have a mode C transponder as it's a...

Interested in soaring safety? Read this by [email protected]
There is not one mention of gliders in the following article. If this doesn't convice you, your students, or the undisciplined pilots in your community to get with the program I don't know what will. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/12/10/071210fa_fact_gawande Matt Michael

GPS receiver for LNAV by soaringtheskies
I have a Cambridge LNAV and I want to replace my LX400, which is currently being used purely as a GPS receiver, with something else to provide a GPS feed to the LNAV, preferably without taking up a space on my instrument panel. Any suggestions?

Contest Class Development for Future Success - The Case fordeveloping the Handicapped Classes by [email protected]
As a still under 40, very active standard class pilot with an LS8 and a Duckhawk on order, and who has flown a few regionals and one nationals (Montague 2012), I'll chime in with a few observations about why I haven't been very motivated to fly any US-based competitions this year. (1) Time...

What Flarm really needs... by [email protected]
Flarm needs a box that is similar to that used by A&Ps to do transponder checks. Something portable that would allow you to test the send and receive range of your glider on the ground. Idally you would do sy 4 tests. Off the nose, behind, and left and right. Range analysis tool is ok, but it's...

Blanik Weak Link for Winch Launch??? by Gary Emerson
I'm really curious what weak link people are using to winch launch Blaniks with. If you are using the CG bridle, do you use the blue tost weak link (in the BGA list) or a stronger one? Blue seems too weak and wants to break frequently and under only moderate climb angles. The L-13 manual...

302 wind calculation by AK
Does anyone have any insight into how a 302 calculates wind? How good is it in regards to wind a straight flight with very little turning? How valuable is it on a ridge? What does it need in order to calculate probable wind one 360 turn, part of a turn, two turns? Any information is appreciated.

Static Wing Load Testing of Old Wooden Glider Wings by LongJourney
I'm restoring a 1963 Std Austria and trying to decide the risks and merits of load testing the wings. I can't find anything definitive on the web, at least nothing that doesn't get contradicted by some other source. My concern is that load testing may damage the wings in an undetected way. OTOH,...
