With the recent spate of Cirrus accidents, the question arises, "Is it time for a special certification review?" In the last twenty years, four general aviation aircraft have been subjected to special certification review following a series of accidents. The Cessna 210, Piper Malibu, Beech...

FAA: Runways come up short by Andrew Sarangan
The FAA says runways without a 1000-ft overrun area are unsafe. The solution? Extend the overrun by shortening the runway. That sounds fishy to me. What am I missing here? Reference: http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/national/15925782.htm

streamer clouds by Jose
Last September I flew from Santa Rosa to Renton and photographed an interesting cloud which reminded me of what a jet contrail might look like if somebody flew an arc over a river. Pictures posted he http://www.flying20club.org/streamer.html Anybody seen anything like this before? Any idea...

Re-establishing currency - Missed Biannual by Beavis
I have a Private Pilot - Single Engine - Land, but I haven't flown in a couple of years. My Medical is still good until the end of April 2007, but I didn't take my biannual review, so I guess my priviledges expired as of the end of October 2006. How do I renew my priviledges? Do I simply...

American Flight 191 - Recovery Procedure by Rick Umali
Last night I watched a fascinating documentary on the History Channel, titled (I think) "Flight 191". This is the American Airlines DC-10 crash on March 25, 1979, in which 270+ were killed, after the No. 1 engine blew off its wing. (I was only eleven when this happened.) In the last part of the...

Lipitor and third class medical by nobody
My third class medical is coming up soon and I am a little worried. My doctor put me on Lipitor for elevated cholestrol this past year. Will this cause any red flags, problems or require further documentation for my third class medical? Or will this cause no problems? Any information is greatly...

What ever happened to alka-seltzer in mogas? by M
Anyone has done the test of dropping the alka seltzer into mogas known to have ethanol? Did it fizz? I can definitely say that alka-seltzer does not fizz in ethanol free regular gasoline. Just tested it today and Jay did that a few days ago. Now I end up with this pack of alka-seltzer that I...

Prices at Scottsdale.. by Dan
Does anyone know if there is an FBO at SDL that does not charge the $50 ramp fee! This is getting crazy. They must be trying to scare off the piston crowd. --Dan

How to tell my instructor to increase glidespeed with headwind? by Nik
Ok, my instructor did a simulated engine failure in the pattern; winds were around 20kts in the air and 13kts on the ground. Did everything perfectly; however after we took off again, he told me to maintain 65 kts next time, and I totally disagreed. The manual says 65 kts for best glide speed;...

the New Tiger by Dice
Since I started working on my ticket, and now my instrument, I have been in love with the new Tigers from day one of my training. I can think about buying a plane now, and I'm disappointed that the New Tiger outfit tanked. There are a number of them on Controller and other sites for sale. Is...

Flags of Our Fathers by Jay Honeck
Saw the new Clint Eastwood-directed take on the famous flag-raising at Iwo Jima with friends this evening, and enjoyed it immensely. The battle scenes are pretty intense, and it's not the kind of movie you see if you want a feel-good experience -- but it certainly made me (once again) appreciate...
