Pirep: Garmin GPSMAP 296 versus 295. (very long) by Jon Woellhaf
I got my first GPS, a Magellan, in April of 1995. I thought it was an absolute marvel - and it was, at the time. I got my second GPS, a Garmin GPS III Pilot, in November of 1997, for about $650. It was a hundred times better than the Magellan. I got my third GPS, a Garmin GPSMAP 295, in February of...

How does a Prop Governor work? by Felix
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can explain exactly how a prop governor works for a constant speed prop system? All I know is that the engine Oil pushes a piston in the prop hub that twists the prop to the appropriate angle. Thanks, Felix

TFR Penalty by Magellan
Does anyone know what the penalty is for busting a Presidential TFR? I've talked with a controller and AOPA and their opinions are pretty varied...Don't ask why I want to know this, it's embarassing!

Corsair Parts, anyone? by Jay Honeck
So we're wrapping up our new "Corsair Suite", and it's looking great! It should be on-line by this time tomorrow. One thing we really need, however, is some sort of authentic Corsair stuff to put in it. You know, a hydraulic actuator, or an airspeed indicator, or SOMETHING from a real, live...

Four blade prop on a Bonanza? by Peter R.
Today I just saw a four blade prop on a V-tail Bonanza at Niagara Falls Airport, NY. This seemed a bit unusual to me, but then again, I only have a few years of flying experience. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this type of prop? -- Peter

Flying to Ashland/Medford Oregon by Ron Rosenfeld
I'm thinking of flying myself there from the east coast the beginning of October. I'd appreciate any thoughts as to what sort of weather or other problems I might expect getting into (and out of) that area. Thanks. Ron (EPM) (N5843Q, Mooney M20E) (CP, ASEL, ASES, IA)

AvMap IV price range by Kai Glaesner
Hello, I would like to buy an AvMap IV and wonder what's the street (or internet-mailorder) price for this unit in the US. Avmap in europe told me that it's possible to load european data on an US-bought AvMap and the price they offer the unit for in europe seems quite high (~1665.00 EUR). Bet...

Pathetic Pilot Salaries by Vic
Hi, I am a 35 year old software programmer thinking about a possible career change into aviation. I am currently working on my PPL. I've come to know some pilots who are currently flying for ASA and Comair. Both of them made UNDER 17,000.00 last year. They are both young guys without families,...

Unnecessary verbiage or sensible redundancy? by Tony Cox
I've had a smoldering dispute with a CFI friend of mine for years about whether to announce (say) "zero-two" or just "two" when operating at an uncontrolled field with runways 2-20. My friend is of the opinion that the extra "zero" is superfluous, whereas I've always instinctively said...

C182S nose fuel sumps by john smith
The C172S has three fuel sumps in the nose. The C182S has two (according to the PIM, beneath the fuel selector and on the lower right side of the cowl)... but I am wondering what the thin stainless steel tube on the front of the firewall is for? It looks like a fuel drain, but I cannot find any...

thank you, AOPA! (new rules issue) by Cub Driver
The Sport Pilot rules process brought with it a change to the Recreational Pilot rules. Now the Rec Pilot can get a sign-off for operating in ATC airspace and landing at B, C, and D airspace airports without being specifically trained for each one. However, my CFI didn't have and couldn't get the...

Flying to MDW by Andrew Sarangan
I am seeking some advice on flying into MDW (Chicago Midway). I will be going IFR from Dayton. I am planning on filing direct (/G) to the CGT VOR, because all STARs and preferred routings seem to terminate at the CGT VOR with radar vectors after that. I am planning on parking at Atlantic...
