Approach Plates on PDA (PIREP) by
Stan Prevost
A few days ago there was a thread here discussing how to make use of digital
NACO approach plates on a PDA. The context was that a pilot could download
and print fresh current charts for the primary airport(s) and alternate(s),
and have charts for other airports available on a PDA for use in the...

Iis there a weather chart with cloud base and tops depicted? by
Terence Wilson
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area we've had coastal clouds in the
mornings with ceilings in the 1000-2000 range recently, 10-20 miles
west of Oakland the clouds dissipate completely. I was wondering
weather there exists a reliable way of determining the cloud tops
(other than PIREPs).

ILS approach and VOR Alpha Approach video by
[email protected]
Knocked out a couple of approaches today in IMC conditions. Was cut
short due to a vacuum system problem (note, not the pump).
Ceilings 1500 at KJAN and 1400 on my approach into KMBO.

Instrument Rating Foreign Pilot by
gwengler
I need to get my FAA license upgraded. Currently it is ME, VFR, based
on my Canadian ME IFR ATPL. To have it include IFR, I have to write
the FAA Knowledge Test "Instrument Rating - Foreign Pilot (IFP)". I
cannot find/google what exactly is being tested for the IFP: Is it
questions from the...

Government/Jepp Plate Comparison by
rps
I've been away from flying for a while. I stopped flying at around the
time the government plates were rumored to be changing to a new format.
I used to use Jepps.
I picked up flying again recently. The pilot's store I went to was out
of the Jepp express packs, so I decided to give the...

first approach in IMC by
G. Sylvester
I got my IA on June 2nd. June 17th I took some friends up and I poked
through a puff of a cloud. It was IMC but only about 0.01 hours but
it counted. :) Well today I was flying back to the bay area from
up north. SQL was reporting scattered at 2500 and I wanted to shoot
an approach with my...

aircraft approach category quandary by
[email protected]
I know the aim para 5.4.7 says that aircraft approach categories are
based on 1.3 times the stall speed in the landing config at max
certificated gross landing weight (comes from far 97.3 (b).
However I know I have read somewhere, perhaps the aim or a far,
something along the lines that where the...

My First GPS Approaches by
john smith
Flew my first GPS approaches this morning...
Wow!!! Easy and precise!
I was flying a 1997 C182S with King KLN 94 GPS and UPSAT MX 20 moving
map display.
The moving map has a lot of lag during a turn, but fly the OBS and you
go right where you are supposed to.

Garmin 430 "Approach Not Active" by
David
Yesterday I flew two approaches with my GNS 430, the RNAV (GPS) RWY 03
at KCHO, and the RNAV (GPS) RWY 24 at KROA. In both cases, the 430
reported "Approach Not Active" just s I reached the FAF (JAGAG at CHO
and HIBAN at ROA), and stopped sequencing. I am quite certain that I
activated both...

Should I file to an intersection? by
Slav Inger
Hi all,
Question: take a look at the VOR Rwy 28 approach at Marshall Brooks
field (RMY). I've filed IFR to airports where the VOR IAF happened to
be the VOR which was no problem, I'd just have that VOR be the last
fix in the route box on flight plan form. In RMY's case, the IAF
appears to be...

Practical IFR Question (for centre controllers) by
David Megginson
This weekend, I'm flying almost due south 340 nm from Ottawa to
Philadelphia, as I mentioned in a separate posting. Inevitably, the legs of
my planned flight zigzag around a track of 180 deg M, some slightly on the
east side, and some slightly on the west. Consider this part of the trip,
all on...

GPS 16L at KHEF by
PA28Rdrvr
Hello. I see there are lots of smart folks in this NG and I learn a lot
from you. I have a question that I sure someone can answer for me. I'm not
so knowledgeable about some of the GPS approach procedures. I was reviewing
the GPS 16L @ KHEF (Manassas VA) and am not sure which DH is applicable...

Looking for GCO's in New York area. by

Does anybody know of any airports in the New York City area with a GCO
installed? This is the new(ish) "4 click for ATC, 6 clicks for FSS"
gizmo. It seems like something I should expose my students to.

Garmin 430W/530W first impressions by
Viperdoc[_4_]
Rode back with my friend in his turbine Bonanza after the installation of a
530W/430W. We had a good chance to play with both boxes during the trip. As
before, they are very intuitive and relatively easy to operate.
The screen write rate is a lot faster than previously, and the plane
position...

VFR on top by
MC
Australia is changing/rearranging its' airspace model to more closely
line-up with ICAO and also to be a _very_ close copy of the current
USA system.
Basically there will be a heck of a lot of class-E. (usually bottomed
at FL180, but in some areas down to A085).
Our radar coverage won't change...

ICAO Flight Plans - RNAV/RNP?? by
Dan[_1_]
All,
I am trying to figure out how to complete the ICAO information on
fltplan.com for filing a flightplan for a C182 with a Garmin 530W.
The RNAV/RNP stuff has me confused. What would the proper answers be
for an aircraft with a 530W? How about a standard Garmin 430?
I've searched high and low...
