Headwind? What's that...?
I flew MHT-BWI on Southwest yesterday... We were making no better than 270 knots groundspeed. I guess the Cap't was not BS'ing us about a stiff headwind at ~33,000... Any slower & we'd have to gotten out & pushed... -- A host is a host from coast to & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433 |

Sounds backwards but there were some strong winds yesterday right down to the ground... and way up into the 30s. I flew ALB to RDU at 8k - 45 to 50 knots at times with 500fpm lee wave from PA south. *Lennies visible to at least the high 20s with airliners reporting "we can't hold altitude precisely, a bit of moderate, just wanted you to know". *Ground reports at 35knots+ with stonger gusts. *A little tough to escape on the east coast that day. I'd like to hear what the airlines were doing MIA to BWI yesterday. Crossing the Sierras in my Mooney I've encourted 100 knots. Combined with downdrafts I've actually had a ground speed below 20 knots confirmed by ATC. -Robert |

Same trip the following week, winds on the ground were right in my face 270@25G38. By the time I reached my (low) cruising alitude, the best I could do was 75 kts. The usual 2.2 hr flight took 3.7 hrs. Any worse and I would have run out of gas and daylight before getting home. On Xmas night, I was amazed to see reports of gusts in excess of 100 mph at many locations in Southern CA. These fronts seem to be unusually strong this year. So much for the weather gods' prediction that the Southwest was going to have an unusually dry and mild winter because of "La Nina" cooling the Pacific waters. It's been the exact opposite. Wettest and windiest winter in 5 yrs. John Galban=====N4BQ (PA28-180) -- Message posted via AviationKB.com http://www.aviationkb.com/Uwe/Forums...ation/200801/1 |
