Default Crossing Mexico-US border without transponder

On a trip to Mexico my transponder failed. How can I cross back into
the US with a failed transponder.

Heck wouldn't even have to do that , just follow the steady line back into
the US!

You call the FSDO and ask for a waiver.

Why do you need a transponder?
If you file the appropriate flight plan and land to clear US Customs, I
don't understand why you would need one.
I fly a 1945 Aeronca Champ with no electical system, is there some new
rule that mandates a transponder for transborder operation?

Fill up your plane with cocaine and your chances of being stopped or
detected should go way down. They're too busy chasing all the law abiding
people.

Remember the old joke ?

How would terrorists smuggle a nuke into the US?

Easy, they would just hide it in a cargo of cocaine.

(Not so funny anymore but all more true.)
