Evidence of this is clearly seen by the success of NASCAR (now the number one sport in the world, based on attendance), or the popularity of "demolition derbies" at any of hundreds of county fairgrounds across America. Is this true? Do NASCAR attendances really exceed those of football (soccer)? I don't know about the *whole* world, but there is no NASCAR in Europe, but there is soccer. Soccer is not that polpular in the US (as far as I was told), but is very popular in many other parts of the world. http://www.google.com/search?q=most+popular+sport is what google turns up about that. -- The more one is absorbed in fighting Evil, the less one is tempted to place the Good in question. (J.P. Sartre) The U.S. women's soccer team has managed to create some new interest in soccer within the United States. Perhaps it will remain for awhile. As for NASCAR in Europe; if NASCAR ever invades formula 1, they will have no doubt have drivers with names like Bobby Ray Hall!!!! :-)))) Dudley Henriques International Fighter Pilots Fellowship Commercial Pilot/ CFI Retired For personal email, please replace the at with what goes there and take out the Z's please! dhenriquesZatZearthZlinkZdotZnet |

It was a tiny blip of interest. They started a womens pro soccer league and it has already folded. Soccer will not ever be a spectator sport in the US. Ever. |

It would cost a fortune in riot control anyway. :-) DH |

There is a VERY HIGH interest in soccer by young people from ages 4 to about 12, and that interests is growing as those kids get older and a new crop of younger ones is thrown into the mix. When I was in Elementary School, I had not even HEARD of soccer, much less played it. I'm now 40+ and practically every kid in the nieghborhood is playing it, and every High School has a team. Our local soccer club is having a hard time getting enough coaches because the number of kids signing up each year is growing by more than 50% over the previous year. This is in South Texas, the heart of HighSchool football hystaria. Now, as these kids get older, many will retain that interest in soccer and wish to see US teams in person and on TV. They will introduce their kids to soccer and it will grow from there. It will probably take several generations, but I expect it to be as LEAST as popular as basketball. Now if someone can convince my wife that flying is as safe as soccer I can get into the air (.... helping to keep it on topic-ish) ET |
