It was the only way they could get a signal in both the civilian and military
air bands. If you want to be able to use the military homing gear that is restricted to military frequencies, you had to have part of your signal in the military band. It is a crystal BITCH making an antenna that is as good a radiator at the fundamental as the second harmonic.
