Yes, every carrier landing is essentially a crash landing, or so they tell me. I'm not conscious that I flare, either. Does one flare when making a wheelie on a conventional-gear aircraft? Did the Wright Bros flare, or were they making crash landings also? |

They have to reduce the sink rate to a minimum before touching down, and then raise the tail a bit to keep the wheels planted. Banging the mains on with insufficient flare causes what we know as "jackrabbiting" down the runway, and propstrikes are often the result. Dan |
