It happens. I seem to recall a couple of airline pilots leaving the
scene after their jet ran off the end of the runway at one of the NY
airports (JFK or LaGuardia). They were gone long before the crews
were done fishing passengers out of the water. As I recall, they
headed straight for a lawyer.

The one obvious reason a pilot (or driver for that matter) might make
themselves scarce following an accident is to avoid the inevitable
alcohol test.

Or drug test.
