I went to Google Canada some months ago when that godawful Beta version of
Google Groups was introduced in the US. Today it found it's way to the
Canadian site as well. Anybody know of a clean site left?

I'm stuck using Google to access the groups when I'm at work.

why? does your ISP at work does not offer usenet news?

I've found
their version of the groups to be not without merit. It's not as good as
using Outlook Express (or Outlook) -- but it's better than some newsreaders
I've found.

try forte. it is free. - www.forteinc.com

What do you find so wrong with it?

it is a web frontend.

(still searching more newsfeeds for our newsserver (we have now 20+ feeds
up and running) - see http://service.hotze.com/usenet/peering.htm for more
info; I might also add alt.binaries.pictures.aviation some day, depending
on traffic. and there might be a chance for access to the server for r.a.*

It's because he has an unreasonable employer.

"ISP at work"? You've never worked at a company with a real IT
department, have you? Ours doesn't allow anything out of the firewall
without passing through proxies that they can monitor, and that means web
telnet, or ftp only. Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass.

I have the doubtful pleasure to host a site for someone (google translates
it with 'work council') who needs to access the site from within the
company he is working for (Swarovski crystal [1]).

Not even ssh, which is a royal pain in the ass.

you can change the port ssh is using (but you might then violate our
company's usage policy)

Doesn't help if the only connection I'm allowed to make is to port 8080 on
proxy-server.company.com

*ouch*

Yes, I know how you can tunnel ssh through a web proxy. I don't
particularly want to get fired, though.

well, this is a very good point, isn't it?

The other advantage is I have the same .newsrc wherever in the world I
go - I don't have to worry about picking the unread articles out if I'm
using someone else's computer since my news reader is always run on the
same box.

Two words:
HTTP CONNECT

Run your ssh server on port 443. Run a script that contacts the web
proxy and connects to the remote ssh server on port 443, and connect
your ssh client to your script. The proxy can't tell the difference
between ssh and https because of their end-to-end encrypted nature.

If you are using Redmondware, PuTTY will actually do the whole thing for
you.

I used to work for $IT_GIANT, and they didn't filter ssh - it was rather
nice of them.
