In addition to the skin mapping that John_F mentioned, there are also
post installation "storm simulators" that are used to make sure the unit is working. Keep in mind that a stormscope, for all practical purposes, is a fancy noise detector, so any electrical noise in your airplane is a potential problem. You need to take care to avoid ground loops.
