Do you use the template to trace the pattern on the tube, or do you
glue the template to the tube and keep it there while cutting? - Mike

Which ever works for you. I just wrap it around the tube, tape it in place,
and grind to the line on the paper.

Wrap the paper tight, lining up the marks and tape across the joint.
Twist the paper around to clock it right. Slap on another piece of
tape, with about 1/8" laying on the tube. Cheap scotch tape wants to
come apart rahter than off, and you just need a little to hold it in place.

I cut out the template and tape it to the tube, then use a Sharpie
marker to trace the pattern. Then take off the template and grind
away.

I know this is a late response, but (for what it's worth) my trick is
to wrap the pattern around the tube (in the correct place?) and
spray a little white krylon on the exposed tube.

Then grind off the painted area.

Richard, that will work just fine, but it requires that you carefully
cut out the template. Rough cut and tape to the tube, then just cut to
the line.
