A gulfstream jet carrying Nike executives has a landing gear problem and is
trying to burn fuel to land at Hillsboro, Oregon airport. On CNN.

What is the motive behind CNN's coverage of aviation incidents?

It's almost like they are deliberately trying to give aviation a black eye
at every possible opportunity.

CNN wasn't the only one showing this one! Fox, MSNBC, CBS -- all had it
on. I guess the pilot gave it -1G, followed quickly by +3G to dislodge
the gear. The RH main appeared to be jammed against the inner gear door.

I'm glad they were able to get it down and locked.

Why pick on CNN? Fox and MSNBC were also doing wall-to-wall inanities. I
was especially impressed with the guy on Fox who found two Airworthiness
Directives agains the Gulfstream V...one in 2001, the other in 2004. But
then they said that this was a maiden flight (they apparently either built
the airplane in Oregon instead of Atlanta or brought it across the country
on a flatbed), so how could either AD apply?

OK, the reason why the media is so obessed with aviation incidents is because "we all know that man was never meant to fly" The Media is still awe-struck

Nope, according the GulfStream Chief Pilot on MSNBC, there is a 3000#
psi emergency air system that can be used to "blow" the gear down. And
that was done. Apparently, on several of the fly bys, they got good
video of the the gear that was sent to the engineers at GulfStream...

I'm surprised CNN had time between all their commercials to show it.
Throughout the day I randomly turn the TV on and channel surf, and almost
every time I go to CNN there is a commercial running.

My guess is that this was "maiden flight" after delivery or for the
customer. I'm sure the factory or perhaps the dealer has flown it. Of
course I'm just guessing.

For the exact same reason they and others show police chases. On the of
chance that there is a crash at the end.

This is the same reason the media always has a camera pointing at Air Force
1 & Marine 1 when ever they launch.

Gears down now, hooray for GA! Now the network newsmongers have nothing
but a good ending to report.

Weird. About ten, fifteen minutes ago he did a flyby of Hillsboro Tower
and I heard a woman's voice say "Looks like the left gear is retracted
but the right is still down." Moments later, he landed. You guys
might enjoy looking at his flight track log...note the 80kt ground speed
at 10,000 feet, etc.

Here's his flight track.

Wow, he looks drunk. Great plot and I love that website.

It is a great site. I love the fact that I know that they can fix a GV
pretty damn quick.

Now it turns out that Nike bought the Gulfstream used...it is three years
old and probably subject to the ADs. None of the "maiden flight" screamers
noted this. The lady Gulfstream V instructor who took part on a couple of
channels brought up factory flights and the delivery flight when "maiden"
was mentioned, so she didn't know either.

Probably the single most boring piece of news this year. When will
people learn this is BORING?

*shrug* So don't read it then.

As for me, I live and work within site of approaching and departing PDX
traffic and know people who work at the Nike headquarters, so it was pretty
interesting.

It's suspenseful and draws a lot more viewers than congressional coverage.

It's almost like they are deliberately trying to give aviation a black eye
at every possible opportunity.

That's like saying they're deliberately trying to give Tacoma a black eye
for covering the mall shooting there, or that they were giving Ford or the
California Highway Department a black eye during the OJ Simpson chase.
Maybe they were trying to give Nike a black eye. Secretely, they have it
out for Gulfstream?

All I saw on the news last night was the experts stating how safe the
aircraft was and explaining to lay viewers how the problem was fixed, how
well the pilot was trained and prepared for these types of situations and
how the manufacturer, crew, controllers etc cooperated during the problem to
resolve it. Gee...that's pretty harsh.

I wouldn't call that giving GA a black eye, I'd call it giving GA a chance
to pat itself on the back on worldwide television.
