Rent a Garmin 396?

Bring it down. At 75 per week, they could be paid for in a year, and they
would get rented.

Some weeks, like the last week of July, you could not find one for rent,

With the seasonality and shipping times you're probably only going to
have 2 reveue generating weeks out of every 4 on average. Plus,
service will run $50/mo.

At $75/wk you're looking at:

$75 * 2 = $150 - $50 (service) = $100 profit per month (and we haven't
even considered shipping, insurance - these things will break-,
advertising, or what your time is worth for managing all of those
shipments) At $2500, you will go 2 years before paying for the unit
and turning a profit at which time there will probably be a newer unit
out. I think we just answered the question why they are not for
rent...

$150 is too much. But at $100/week I would seriously consider it for
a one to three week cross-country.

You'd be better off charging it to a credit card, using it for a month and
selling it on ebay.
