Not very friendly! Just to answer the question directly: Your instructor is correct. Control altitude with throttle, and airspeed with pitch. It sounds backwards, but that's what they teach. If you were to take a Private Pilot ground school class tomorrow, they would have said that in so many words before the end of the first week. At a pilot proficency course the instructor showd me that either way can work just as well. However even though it seems backwards the pitch for airspeed, power for altitude apparently makes teaching landings easier to start.
