You mean to tell me you don't have a Tevo DVR?
It's time to join the 21st century. :-)

It's funny you should ask. Just the other day, during the playoffs, I
discovered a "record" button on my cable TV remote. I asked my son
"What's that?" -- and he casually responded "Oh, that's for the DVR"

I was astounded. This box has been in my house for over a year, and I
had no idea it was a DVR! I decided to record the Bear's victory
over Seattle, as a test run...

Unfortunately, when it came time to play it back, neither my son nor I
could find a "play" button in any of the menus. The thing has
apparently dutifully recorded the game, but there is no software
button for "play" -- at least in our cable TV package.

I suppose that's available for an extra monthly fee...?

DishNetwork has a DVR button on the remote that gets you into a menu to playback
stuff you record.

My DTV remote has a button called "List" that gets you into a similar menu.

The buttons you want should be on the remote. There should be a
'List' button to see what has been recorded, and a '|' (that's an
arrowhead) button to play the selected recording.

When you pushed the record button did it come up with any kind of menu
or indication that it was actually recording? I have 2 Motorola cable
boxs. 1 has a DVR built in and the other does not but the remotes are
the same and the boxes look the same from the outside. While I swear by
my Tivo on my standard definition TV upstairs, I went with the cable
company DVR downstairs because I wanted HD and at the time Tivo had not
come out with their HD DVR. While I still prefer the TIVO, the cable
company box works well enough and bottom line is it's cheaper then the
Tivo. You should be able to swap out your standard cable box for one
with a DVR for another 10.00 per month
