If you dont' have it already, get the Discovery Channel DVD's on
SpaceShipOne. Absolutely incredibly well done. Beyond inspiring. I probably have watched the first DVD 50+ times. By far the best flying "movie" I've ever seen. Burt Rutan should win a Nobel Prize. Only problem is which category? Is that the one entitled "Black Sky"? -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

It's not better and it's not completely free but I think what they are referring to is MythTV. It's a Linux based DVr program. The upside is that you don't have to pay a monthly service fee for the program data. The downside is you need to buy a PC with the proper capture cards and hook it up to your TV. Since you say your paying 5.00 a month for the TIVO, I'm going to guess that you have DirectTV. The Myth solution will not work for you as it won't control your satellite's receiver. |

You are correct, and I've heard of that. I see the $5/mo as insanely reasonable based on the following: - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - The hardware was free. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - I have no PC's anywhere near the TV's. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - If it breaks, DirecTV swaps me for a new one. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - The whole shebang works seamlessly with DirecTV - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - There is no extra attention or maintenance required. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. - My wife understands how to use it and likes it. For $5/month. G I was thinking there might be something new I hadn't heard of. |

You mean to tell me you don't have a Tevo DVR? It's time to join the 21st century. :-) It's funny you should ask. Just the other day, during the playoffs, I discovered a "record" button on my cable TV remote. I asked my son "What's that?" -- and he casually responded "Oh, that's for the DVR" I was astounded. This box has been in my house for over a year, and I had no idea it was a DVR! I decided to record the Bear's victory over Seattle, as a test run... Unfortunately, when it came time to play it back, neither my son nor I could find a "play" button in any of the menus. The thing has apparently dutifully recorded the game, but there is no software button for "play" -- at least in our cable TV package. DishNetwork has a DVR button on the remote that gets you into a menu to playback stuff you record. |

My DTV remote has a button called "List" that gets you into a similar menu.

When you pushed the record button did it come up with any kind of menu or indication that it was actually recording? I have 2 Motorola cable boxs. 1 has a DVR built in and the other does not but the remotes are the same and the boxes look the same from the outside. While I swear by my Tivo on my standard definition TV upstairs, I went with the cable company DVR downstairs because I wanted HD and at the time Tivo had not come out with their HD DVR. While I still prefer the TIVO, the cable company box works well enough and bottom line is it's cheaper then the Tivo. You should be able to swap out your standard cable box for one with a DVR for another 10.00 per month |

The user interface for MythTV and your average cable company DVR sucks donkey dongs compared to TiVo. And a TiVo box is extremely cheap compared to a decent PC to run MythTV on, which has to be balanced against the $7/month cost of the TiVo service. -- Paul Tomblin http://blog.xcski.com/ I'm not going to be a place that allows viruses to go unpunished. This is one of those cases where being an early adopter has its benefits. I have a Series 1 TiVo with lifetime subscription. I put in a larger hard drive and ethernet card and now I've got a system with no monthly fee that's easy to use and works with my DirecTV box. I can "backup" any show, edit out commercials and burn DVDs. And if I happen to be at work when someone posts that a cool airplane show is on that night, I use my browser to tell my TiVo to record it. Yes, I'm a geek. -- Paul Tomblin -- Don Poitras |
