I was actually having fun while training for the rating. That was a change. Next year? CMES? That will round out the powered rating for me. There's a guy in the area who supposedly teaches a SES course for about $800 or so. What did you have to do? Any commercial maneuvers? My rating cost me $1000 for everything. This included the instructors, plane, and examiner fee. I went to Browns Seaplane base in Winter Haven, FL. Nice folks. I did a lot of take off and landings. Since I already had at least a Commercial Single Engine this was just an add on. I only had to do the required items for the Sea side. I could not get a ATP Airplane Single engine Sea since the Cub has no Instrument for approaches. That is fine. I had a blast flying the Cub! I am hoping to go back next year and get the ATP-MES. They have a plane to do that. Michelle |

If I can get an ATP MEL/MES I will consider it. I've always wanted to do this... seems like an easy way to avoid a biennial. I've already got comm-inst-ASMEL. The local guy I mentioned before is flying some lightweight single like a Taylorcraft or something similar on floats off Lake Wylie, SC. Where is Spruce Creek, if you know? And where is Jack Brown's? I know it's in Winter Haven but I'm not sure what that's close to in Florida. Yes, I know I'm being lazy but what the hell... you brought it up! As an aside, my dad flew (amongst others) the SA-16 Albatross when he was in Air Rescue at Otis AFB on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I asked him his biggest impression of flying that manly beast and he looked at me and said: "HUH?" Apparently it was a bit loud. -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |

Winter Haven is about 30 minutes south of Orlando. Huh? The cub is not that loud. We flew with the window open. It was a little cold in the morning. Michelle |

According to my dad, who also flew C-45, C-46, C-47, C-54, and C-121 amongst others, REAL LOUD. Of course the resulting hearing loss affected his higher frequencies the most... like the voice of my late mother when she was calling him. G -- Mortimer Schnerd, RN mschnerdatcarolina.rr.com |

Where is Spruce Creek, if you know? Spruce Creek is near Daytona Beach, and is the largest (and best, IMHO) residential airpark in the world. See scpoa.com . And where is Jack Brown's? I know it's in Winter Haven but I'm not sure what that's close to in Florida. Jack Brown's is on a lake next to the Winter Haven (GIF) airport, about halfway between Tampa and Orlando. They do most of their instruction in Cubs (and a Legend Cub) on floats. |

An MES add-on would be a good reason to visit (as would an L-39 ride from my friend). Does your friend have a website with contact numbers? D. |
