The way I remember the story is as follows:

Bird flock strike, took out the canopy and stopped one engine. Pilot called
eject, eject eject. RIO went. Pilots seat would not go. Engine that went out
did the hydraulics so no gear. Landed belly up and I think this was in a
practice area near Fallon, NV.

Of course at my age there are a lot of cobwebs in my head's memory section.

My guess is that the Radar Intercept Officer didn't like the way the pilot
was flying, so he ejected. Anyway, somebody had some explaining to do.

IIRC this incident was caused by VIP who was taken for a ride and
accidently ejected himself.
