Periscope on the left side of the aircraft. It
is visible in one of the pictures of the Spirit at
the NASM. IIRC, Lindbergh said he did not use it,
but stuck his head out the window in order to see.

I know them from IL-2 FS.
Jeah its pretty hard to bring a F4U down on a carrier with no sight on
final aproach.
But at least I could adjust the direction in general aproach, diving
with low rpm and pitch, all flaps and gear out, just pulling up a few
ten jards before arresting in the wire.

The Spit or Hurry is easier when gliding in with low angle and two point
touch.
