Danbury, Connecticut has a nice airport near a rail link to the city.

But consider accounting for your own time when comparing costs of alternatives. Sure, landing at KTEB, KEWR, or KLGA may take 20-200 bucks to park, but you get to Manhattan in half an hour. - FChE |

The train isn't that cheap, and it dosen't run as often as others around NYC. If you're thinking of landing at DXR, you would do better to use HPN. It's a 10 minute cab ride to the White Plains train station. Trains run much more frequently to White Plains than to Danbury, and the trip to Grand Central is probably half the time once you're on a train. At peak times, there's 10-12 trains an hour to/from White Plains. Many of them run express and take a half hour. Even in the middle of the day there's 3 or 4 an hour to White Plains. Check the Metro North schedules at http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm. If you are flying into DXR, I would strongly recommend all arrivals and departures be done during daylight, or use instrument procedures, if you're not familiar with the airport. |

Hmm, OK, I'm outvoted...my wife and I flew there for a New York trip two
weeks ago because we have relatives in Redding. My preference otherwise would have been HPN, but it was a very pleasant trip overall and I thought I'd mention the Danbury airport. Pirep:
We flew into Linden, New Jersey, LDJ. It was about 45 minutes into the city by taxi ($100) and about the same total journey time back by train and taxi ($much less). The airport was great. It's quiet and small so time spent taxiing was minimal and time spent waiting for other aircraft was zero. The staff at the FBO were very friendly and helpful, and the first night's fee of $20 was waived with fuel purchase. I really liked it. I've never flown into the big ones, but my guess is the extra time you spend taxiing and queueing eats up the time savings of being closer and much of the cost savings of being closer if you take a taxi. The biggest disadvantage was the trains don't go that often so you could have to wait. Overall a great experience though. |

Can you provide details on mass transit (bus and/or train) from the city? Distance of bus stop/station from the airport? Transportation to/from the FBO, etc. --Jeff |

Train to and from the city is half an hour. It's New Jersey Transit
(www.njtransit.com). I don't know about other days of the week, but on Sundays there are 2 trains an hour, very close together. Train goes to Penn Station. Taxi ride between the airport and the station is 5 minutes. Thanks for the PIREP. Can you provide details on mass transit (bus and/or train) from the city?
