No need for a switch. The 302 detects climb using the GPS and will
display a circular arrow while in circling mod, and nothing while in
cruise.

Why not just go fly with it and compare to the other vario?

Oh, and be sure to check the TE page and make sure that it's around
100 if not using a TE probe, and near 0 if using a probe.

Tom,

The reason I'm trying to figure this out now is because it'll be a
little while before she flies and I'd like to know if I should send in
the 302 while it's down.

By the way, Gary Kammerer from CAI confirmed that the "netto" mode
will cause this very symptom. I've responded with a question as to why
this happens, but haven't heard back yet. I will check it tonight to
see if it indeed is set to "netto" mode and try changing it to see if
it behaves differently.

Just found this explanation in another thread:

past, with the glider on the ground, the needle points
to about 1.5kts up....which I have just realised it
what it should do...as it is assuming if the glider
is maintaining altitude it must be in rising air eauivalent
to the sink rate"


It's making sense now. I catch on "eventually".... Ha ha!

Default Another 302 question...

I flew with my 302 in "relative" or "super netto" for years and it behaved
just fine. Earlier this spring, I experimented and set it as "netto".
The needle moved up to about 1.5 and stayed put (while on the ground), as I
expected it to. The problem is, it stayes biased that way while thermaling,
so you think you are going up 1.5, and the audio says so too. But, you are
not!--My TE vario and the Altimeter say "You are going nowhere!" I thought I
could mentally compensate for it but I couldn't. I reset back to super netto
and all was well again!
