Back-up systems can only work if they exist.

I explained the backup issue in a previous response. The FAA
"Had" microwave backup until the unqualified idiots decided
they did not need it and went single threaded with outside
contractors(Telco).

Current FAA Management is clueless about technical issues
and redundancy because they have filled their ranks with
bean counters and minorities who are unqualified to meet
diversity edicts handed down by feminist man hater goon
squads in D.C.

Your "Vagina" management at work. Emotional and illogical
and vindictive. Hillary in 08? God help us all.

Actually, it's you who are clueless about tech matters, but don't let me
stop you making an asshole out of yourself!

Not that anything could stop ya.

Didn't they have cell phones? Didn't they use them?

What makes microwaves better than cell phones?

The phone lines carry more than voice.

Cell phones in a dark radar room with dozens of controllers
controlling air traffic? You are kidding right?

ATC just don't work that way. The microwave link is a
redundant path to the remote communication sites that
communicate from air to ground and ground to air. It's just
a communication path through the air using microwaves when
the telco fails. The remote VHF or better known as RCAG
sites (Remote Communication Air to Ground) are just keyed
and accessed through phone lines and most WERE also
available to be accessed through back-up FAA microwave links.

It's all about redundancy and not depending on one single
mode of operation. The FAA got rid of most of that
redundancy in favor of big business(MCI and AT&T) and Civil
Rights staffs that travel to Las Vegas and talk bad about
white men all day while drunk.

The culture and priorities in the FAA are twisted and
skewed.
