The Vulcan was used as a testbed for a number of engines and intake
configurations. I don't know which engine was being tested in the picture (presumably for an aircraft with side intakes), but amongst the engines tested were the Concorde's Olympus (reheated versions of the Vulcan's Olympus), the Pegasus engine (of Harrier fame) and the Tornado engines (RB199).
