Sioux City, Iowa has decided to make the best of its ICAO moniker,
SUX, rather than change it. The airport's new slogan FlySUX, is
the centerpiece of a new marketing campaign. The FAA offered five
alternative designators, including GAY (no, we didn't make it up).

The self-deprecating campaign is the brainchild of airport board
member Dave Bernstein, a local businessman who moonlights as a
concert promoter. ...

In 1988, Sioux City officials, enlisting the assistance of its
congressional delegation, petitioned the Federal Aviation
Administration to drop SUX. At one point, the FAA offered the city
five different options -- GWU, GYO, GYT, SGV and GAY. Not wild
about any of the other choices -- particularly the latter --
airport trustees eventually called the whole thing off.

Any publicity is good publicity. Right?

The only time landing at Sioux City SUX is when you do it in a DC10.
Just ask the passengers of the last one that landed there.- Hide quoted text -

And I still argue that Capt Al Hayes and his crew should have been
given a few million bucks and early retirement for their outstanding
performance...

I believe they were both offered early retirement. Hayes now
suppliments his post-retirement income by offering lectures on the
incident.
You can always start an airline and pay the lineman the best saleries
and offer the quarterback the left overs. However, you're going to get
the quarterback you paid for.
