A poster on rec.crafts.metalworking suggeste the following filter for
Agent users:

subject: {M[',-`. ]I[',-`. ]5[',-`. ]P}

Haven't tried it yet myself but someong else on the group says it
works well.

I justed added it to my MI5 twit filter. Hopefully it will work.

I was hoping that the rec.crafts.metalworking group would be a good
place to pick up info but it seems to be 90% off topic political crap.
I gave up on it after a couple weeks.

I simply filtered out anything that contains M, I, and 5. Should work
okay as long as no one tries to post anything important about Mig 15s.

It's really a secret plot by MI5 to get you using MiG 15s.

Actually, according to my Diverse Unified Conspiracy Theory ©2007 you
are are one of them. DUCT© is derived from all the known conspiracy
theories and can be simply stated as
a: everyone is out to get me
b: just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me
c: buy stock in Alcoaź, makers of the finest grades of aluminum foil
for hats
d: anyone who says he doesn't believe in DUCT© is obviously involved
in the cover up.

I don't know how you do the "any character" in filters? I'm using Outlook
Express.

Does OE support regular expressions?

In this case, MT-NewsWatcher defines "." as "any single character", and
".*" means "one or more characters", and "^" means beginning of the line
of text, in this case the subject line, for example:

Kill if subject matches the regular expression "^M.I.5"

If I were to use ".*" instead of ".", come to think of it, the filter
would also kill anything with MiG-15 or MiG 15 at the beginning of the
subject line. It works now as is, so I'll worry about the loon if he
gets more fanciful later on.

"SH" == Steve Hix writes:
SH In this case, MT-NewsWatcher defines "." as "any single
SH character", and ".*" means "one or more characters"

If that's true, it's not canonical regular expressions. "*"
(asterisk) should mean "0 to many of the preceding character". "+"
means "1 to many of the preceding character".

It does, in spite of me.

"+" means "1 to many of the preceding character".

Rather than depend on my rapidly-aging memory...

Description Symbol Meaning
asterisk * match zero or more times
plus sign + match one or more times
question mark ? match zero or one time
backslash \ escape the following character
period . match any one character
caret ^ negate a match in [], or start of line
square brackets character class
parentheses grouping
dollar sign $ end of line
ampersand & and
or sign | or

Which explains my reluctance to do this sort of thing without the
reference close to hand.
