Yes, we all know that some French resisted collaborating with the Nazis. They were brave men and women who often died for their cause. All of which has little to do with the topic, which was the Vichy government and the vast majority of French who were content to wait it out. If you're trying to say the Resistance acted as a moral counter-balance to the vast majority of French who sat on their hands whilst under the yoke of the most immoral regime in modern history, you'd be wrong. But what else is new? -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" The list of countries with people that "sat on their hands whilst under the yoke of the most immoral regime in modern history" includes Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia, and Greece. The vast majority "sat on their hands" in each of those countries as well. The vast majority in any era in any place does nothing, because the vast majority would rather live and does not have the means to resist in any effective manner -- in France or elsewhere. And before you get patriotic, bear in mind that the same was true for the American Colonies -- the majority of colonists did not in any way directly or indirectly support the Revolution. Dan |

The list of countries with people that "sat on their hands whilst
under the yoke of the most immoral regime in modern history" includes Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia, and Greece. Right, but none of those countries were loudly proclaiming themselves to be "world powers" and "leaders of the free world", as was the case with France prior to WWII. Their collapse in the Battle of France was so complete, quick, and unexpected that their national prestige will probably never recover. The truth is that France prissily regarded themselves as a major world power long after the shine was off her apple. The amazing thing is that they continue to display this attitude to this day. Ya gotta admire their chutzpah, I suppose -- but it's what makes them the butt of jokes here in America. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

**** list. G, from Greece. Indeed. The Greeks, while no match for the Germans, managed to thoroughly humiliate the Italians before falling under Axis occupation. It's interesting to note that despite this performance there are few in America who make "Italian jokes" the way we poke fun at the French. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

Iowa? Iowa City? Where? Those of us from New York (that's that big city on the East Coast that's still part of America) have heard jokes made about and told on every race, creed, color, and shape of mankind. It's how you knew you'd arrived. Dan |
