A transatlantic flight was also a pipe dream for one of the founding
fathers of the French gliding federation, Raymond Siretta. He worked as a pilot in French Guyana in the Thirties, and during his transatlantic voyages (by steamer, sailing boat and zeppelin!), he studied the skies and concluded it should be possible to cross the Atlantic in pure soaring flight between Dakar (Senegal) and Cayenne (French Guyana), 4000 km, using the trade winds.
