Because the environmental controls aren't as strict as other places, it would put out a lot of smoke at times. We were approaching in an H-3 from Yokosuka and told the field was IFR. The visibility was unlimited except about a 100 yard wide plume of smoke centered on the tower. Rob So it really does happen? LOL! Yes, they're still up there waiting! ;-) That's OK; the Sea King's got the endurance for the job. ;-) |

I was very proud of my pilots for not saying the things to the tower over the radio, that they were saying about them in the aircraft. Rob |

So, the aircraft had the endurance, but it was a close call for the crew? No, sorry, I didn't make myself clear. I was referring to the Sea King is no longer in service in the US Navy, except a couple of isolated rescue/utility locations. It wasn't a close call at all, just annoying to have to add the time of an instrument approach when the field was completely visible to the entire world, except the tower. Rob |
