My thinking was that by putting out more flaps he would immediately go up the backside of the curve and increase ground effect too. Then he might have been able to drop the nose a bit and accelerate? Whether this would have worked is, of course, moot, but I was thinking would this be a viable option or would it make everything worse? Cheers |

Well, increasing flap always increases drag and never really improves things. he already has some out but if he hadn't any out and added the first notch it might have helped him a bit. Doubt it though. Bertie |

I could be wrong as I haven't really studied the tape although I have seen it several times, but it might very well be that he actually rotated and sustained deep behind the curve. Lord only knows where his aft cg was with it packed like it was. If this was the case, he could very well have been doomed from rotation if he was so deep that all available power was being used. If he tried to raise the nose to gain even a foot more of altitude, this would start a sink rate that only lowering the nose and reducing the AOA would fix. No altitude to do that and the only outcome would have been the crash. -- Dudley Henriques |

Yess, I agree, though you'd think that someone doing that sort of flying would be fairly good at things like that.. THe strip certainly looks ling enough, but I have no idea how high up they are either. That looks like a 182 to me, BTW. Like all flying you only have to get it wrong once.
