Here is a much more interesting incident, in which far more people
(all civilians) died:

3 July 1988: An Iran Air Airbus A300B2-203 (EP-IBU), flight IR655,
flying from Bandar Abbas to Dubai, was shot down over the Strait of
Hormuz by two SM-2 Standard surface-to-air missiles fired by the USS
Vincennes.


I'm pretty sure the truth of that matter has been out for quite some
time, though mostly ignored by the US press. The US officially has
accepted blame and paid compensation.
