A-65 Oil screen thread pitch?
Doe anybody know what the thread pitch for the oil screen is on a
Continental A-65? I have slightly boogered threads on the engine threads and I want to run a set of dies through (I bought a tool with the dies from McMaster Carr). It looks like 16 TPI is the closest. Does that sound reasonable or does someone know for sure? I checked all the ones that came with the tool by putting them over the threads on the oil screen and let them drop in between the threads. Is that an acceptable way to test for the right pitch or do I need to drop them into the (female) threads in the rear accesory case, which would be damn near impossible to see if they line up perfectly)? Any other ideas (trying to avoid pulling the engine or rear case off)??? Scott Corben Junior Ace with A-65 |

What you need is a simple "thread pitch gage" to be sure. Inexpensive ones can be purchased from most any place that sells measuring tools to machine shops. |

I can't remember the exact name of the tool, but it's made to repair
internal threads that are damaged. Basically looks similar to a piston ring expander with changeable dies that attach at the ends. Then all you do is set the dies into the threads, squeeze the handle a bit to give the dies some pressure to stay in the threads and spin the tool around. Thanks for the info! I think it probably would be good to get a pitch
gauge as well and triple check. Besides, I'm SURE there will be other places I could use the gauge...But it is nice to get that fuzzy feeling from someone else confirming what I see here. Thanks again... Scott Philippe Vessaire wrote: Scott wrote: Doe anybody know what the thread pitch for the oil screen is on a Continental A-65? Scott,
It is called a "Therad Chaser" they make them in all sizes ... you may find them at Enco.com or other machine catalogs. Actually, I'm not sure they actually called it that in their catalog,
but that's essentially what it is. Anyhow...I got the threads repaired yesterday, so I'm ready to button up and test run it. Thanks to all for the help... El Reno Aviation has a tap to fit wich they rent/loan it to F&M STC filter
buyers. Maybe call them? Kent Felkins "Scott" wrote in message .. . Thanks for the info! I think it probably would be good to get a pitch gauge as well and triple check. Thanks for the tip. I bought a tool from McMaster-Carr for repairing
internal threads and it did the trick.... Scott Fly wrote: El Reno Aviation has a tap to fit wich they rent/loan it to F&M STC filter buyers. Maybe call them? Kent Felkins |
