What exactly does this mean? It sounds like the unit can interface with a GPS signal source and include that data with the Mode S data. Bill Daniels |

Becker Mode S Transponder product announcement
A correspondent wrote to me that "The rather rude term "squitter" refers
to the burst transmission that Mode S uses; the extended squitter has an uplink as well as a downlink and has more capacity to transmit additional data such as gps position that can then be used as the basis of an anti-collision warning system." I also heard that the FAA has picked two technologies (to work side by side) for that datalink, and one of them is Mode S Extended Squitter, which is already a capability of most Mode S airborne equipment (e.g. the GTX330). "It's the same datalink over which the FAA provides its Traffic Information System". There's a Mode S FAQ he http://www.eurocontrol.int/mode_s/FAQ/mode_s_faq.htm on which I found: "The Mode S transponder extended squitter is also an enabler for ADS-B operation". If anyone knows more, or finds this inaccurate and can correct it, I should be grateful for that information. Mode S Transponder product announcements (was Becker Mode S Transponder product announcement)
By the way, the Volkslogger Mode S transponder which has been in
progress for some time is now announced as having EASA certification. [See http://www.volkslogger.de/ .] I imagine that it will therefore soon be on sale in Europe. Incidentally, I am not an agent for nor sell their products, but I own a VL logger and may buy their transponder in due course. By the way, I am still angered at this essentially compulsory =
requirement to buy new and expensive equipment. It may have become = desirable and even essential in very busy areas, but for those of us who = fly where traffic is not dense, airspace is simple and where see and = avoid has never failed, it feels like extortion. More so when the ATC = agencies themselves have delayed implementing mode-S enabled ground = equipment. F.A. |
