Estimate for painting a rag airplane.
Hi,
I've been offered a Champ which has been recovered. I'm not sure of the system, but it's the one where the rags are a red color. The fuselage and tail has been done to clear and the wings are white. I'll have to get it done by an A&P due to time/geographical constraints, so my question is, how much might I expect to pay to have the airplane painted and assmbled on the average, including paint cost? The interior, instruments etc have all been installed, so it,s just paint and airframe assembly as well as engine installation and all the usual tidying up. Anyone? |

Anyone? $1200 for painting maybe but even that is a great deal. But the OP was also asking about some assembly. |

@1200 U.S.D. For any reasonable shop, I'd be inclined to triple that and have another $500 in hand for surprises. The last time I shopped out a job like that for a price that sounded too good to be true, it was. |

I was budgeting on about 5 grand to do the job as a worse case scenario. In any case, I'll have a better idea soon. There's an IA going out to look at the airplane. It's still worth it at that, I think . I've even got to get a prop and some seats for it and it's still cheap. More importantly, it's a very sound airplane underneath. Just been covered and the spars have been looked at and there were no corrosion or damage issues with the fuselage. Thanks to all! BJ |

To be legal, any STC'd covering system must be completed with that system, not a mix-and-match job. You need to find out what, exactly, whose system it is and follow it. Some of them are obscenely expensive (Stits isn't bad). I sure hope it isn't a system that's been discontinued, like the Blue River process. Dan |
