Are there any activities underway to grant approval for the Position
Recorders like the flywith CE recorder to be used for badges. They have been approved in Australia, Canada and the UK. It seems that they GPS altitude would be proof enough of 'no landings'. Fred |

Fred Position recorders can already be used for Silver and Gold badges, as approved by ones NAC. The SSA, to my knowledge, has yet to formally approve any position recorders. GPS altitude is not currently acceptable as evidence, if the a position recorder is capable of being approved as an electronic pressure recording barograph, then it may be used on its own. Otherwise, a separate barograph must be carried, and that data also provided. There is a proposal in front of the upcoming IGC plenary session to allow use of GPS altitude, if approved (it's in year 2 stage), I believe it could go into effect as soon as the next Sporting Code update in October... Marc The SSA has approved the FlywithCE position recorder for silver and gold badges. You still have to have a barograph for altitude though. |

It seems that they GPS altitude would be proof enough of 'no landings'. Fred Fred, As others have posted, we approved FlyWithCE as a GPS Position Recorder last year. As others have also noted, the current IGC Sporting Code requires a traditional barograph be carried as well. As a result, there have been very few badge flights documented using this method (IIRC only one or two flights total).
