Perhaps folks have missed digging in to see what's on the Agenda for the Fall SSA Board of Directors Meeting. In case you need a direct link, SSA members can use
http://www.ssa.org/myhome.asp?mbr=4462854266 . If you have an opinion on some of the business items, please contact your Regional Director to influence their representative duties. Quickly! Sorry I didn't post this earlier, I leave to travel East soon. If you are not a member, join! and Enjoy the web services, Soaring Magazine archive, Awards Programs, Group insurance program, and news updates on Governmental issues, among other fun things (member blogging enabled, picture archives, flight test performance articles). We have a power reactor and other nuclear related stuff north of us (Richland, WA). That area has "For reason of national security, pilots are requested to avoid flight below 1800' MSL in this area". That's about 1300 AGL. As I understand it, it's just a request, not a requirement. If they are only two miles from an airport, it seem they would see a lot of aircraft in the 1000-2000 foot AGL range, either over them or nearby. Maybe it was the circling that bothered them? In any case, it was nutty to think about "shooting down" any aircraft that they had time to worry about. An aircraft with evil intentions would simply fly straight into the reactor, long before they could arrange any "shoot down". I wonder what is missing from what we've heard so far; at least the FAA got it right, as I would expect. -- Eric Greenwell - Washington State, USA (change ".netto" to ".us" to email me) |

I've gone into the member's section and don't find it. Thanks, Craig |

The land of the free...
Lots of Wide open spaces and tiny closed minds with a propensity to police state excesses. Sounds like home. ;-) On 2012/10/19 12:57 AM, Andrzej Kobus wrote: On Oct 18, 4:22 pm, CindyB wrote: Perhaps folks have missed digging in to see what's on the Agenda for the Fall SSA Board of Directors Meeting. Now, now, let's not generalize so much. We've had these sensitive areas,
like reactors and dams, for 11 years now, and this is the first time a glider pilot has been harassed. This seems to be a very special case, not "a propensity to police state excesses"; remember, the FAA said it was fine. On 10/21/2012 3:16 AM, BruceGreeff wrote: The land of the free... I wuz just winding RAS up Eric...
Someone DID get locked up without good cause or due process. Some sheriff being over zealous no doubt, but still good for a dig at officialdom. Again, my point is it's not "officialdom" that appears to be the problem, but more likely an "official" - one person, perhaps two or three in one place at that particular time. What I've noticed over the years is we rarely know all the details, so it's difficult to asses the blame; for example, maybe these people were on a super-alert because they'd had recent communications from Homeland Security about potential terrorist acts; maybe the glider pilot was belligerent instead of accommodating; and so on. It does no good to trot out our favorite bogeyman whenever things like this happen, given our lack of knowledge of the situation. -- Eric Greenwell - Washington State, USA (change ".netto" to ".us" to email me) |
