says... The attached pic is a TSQ-70..portable tower in VNam. My aviation company had about 20 of them to install, man and maintain. One of the ones I was responsible for was in a outpost in Song Be...after being mortared countless times, windows blown out, the only thing working was the towers single FM radio. The equipment itself had at least 1000 (seriously) little pin prick nicks from mortar/rocket fragments. It was mounted on a 3/4 ton truck and brought inside the perimeter at nightfall as the landing strip (peneprimed dirt and just long enough to land a c-130) was outside the compound and completely insecure. 1st Cav and Special Forces operated out of Song Be...there was also a Catholic church facility run by nuns and never bothered my NVA! * |

Hope the controllers got combat pay..... One of my NCOs said air traffic controllers would rather control traffic than eat... I once had to put out a controller for some airlift operation in the delta and was out of portable towers...gave a 19 year old kid (who was all by himself) a PRC-25 radio, had him stand in the middle of the field and control the comings and goings...he loved it...arranged for the cavalry to give him meals and something to sleep on at night...and that was it! Don't know what they do nowadays... * |
