Default OT Camera question

I'm using a canon 40D with the 28-135 Canon zoom as supplied with the
camera.

I'd like to get a wide angle, possibly with some macro ability. I like to
keep all the auto focus capabilities of the camera.

What would you pros recommend that wouldn't cause me to mortgage my house to
purchase?

Thanks

Paul

You wouldn't want to use a wide angle lens for true macro work. It would
have to get uncomfortably close to the subject so that it would likely cast
a shadow on it. It would also cause most images to look distorted and flat
objects (like coins) that are sharp in the center and out of focus at the
edges.
Check www.bhphotovideo.com. They have three 50mm autofocus macro lenses to
fit Canon in the $250 range. If you feel you must have wide angle and
"macro" (about 1:3) in the same lens, they have a couple of Sigma zoom
lenses for $350 and $375. Generally, zoom lenses are not as sharp as fixed
length lenses for critical close-up work.
