Practical welding? by mhorowit
A friend lent me an OA rig so I could learn to weld. Lots of good material in the library and on the NGs. But all that welding is done on a welding bench, at a comfortable height. Apparently one does not have to get near an airframe to get a certificate to weld 4130 with OA. How does a welder...

Any plans-built "RV equivalents" out there? by Netgeek
I've been searching quite a bit for something equivalent or similar to an RV-9 but available as a plans-built. So far - no luck (seems that Van has done too good a job 8-)... Basic requirements are - well - same as an RV-9: Metal, 2-seat (not tandem), power from O-200/O-235/IO-240/O-320 - minimum...

smoothing rough concrete hangar floor? by [email protected]
We put in a concrete hangar floor and the finish is less than desirable. There are patches where it's recessed (about 1/8"- 1/4" recessed and rough) and then other areas where it's rough and proud (about 1/8") with swirl marks. Is there anything we can do to mechanically smooth this? Do they...

changing operating limitations by pittss1c
Is it possible to change the operating limitations of your homebuilt after it has been certified? Let me take the more extreme case... I was wondering, if one owned (or bought) an RV3, is it possible to change the operating limitiations to have a red line of 120 knots, and a maximum continous RPM...

Welding prep, cutting notches and stress risers by Michael Horowitz
I'm reading about welding. Here's an article about how to cut a 'fishmouth' joint (and I visualize clamping the tube in a vice, in the meanwhile making small marks in the metal), then the pre-cleaning (using an abrasive, another thing my A&P told me not to use when cleaning tubing) then the...

Aircraft info/advice by Barry
Thanks in advance. I'm looking into building an airplane kit. All the experience here could probably help me as opposed to a blind search. I'm looking for a kit that would be consider IFR flyable. Would probably lean towards four seat but a my wife won't fly is probably not mandatory. I would...

Getting out of the airplane building business by [email protected]
I regret to inform everyone that I have decided to stop further work on my Christavia Mk 4 project. My passion for flight is undimmed, but I've grown weary after 15 years of labor and so much more left to do. The expense of what is left to buy and install is also off putting. Description...

Falco - Kit plane or Plans-built? by Rich S.
The headline on the Falco website reads, "Five Falcos Win Awards at Falco 50th Birthday". They're talking about Oshkosh - oops, I mean Airventure 2005. The judges awarded Grand Champion Plans-built, Reserve Grand Champion Plans-built, and two Bronze Lindys Plans-built to Falcos. The fifth...

Gyrocopter VHF antenna length by Lew
I'm setting up an antenna to fit under the keel of an open-frame two-place gyro. The antenna will extend down underneath the keel from a point about a foot forward of the main gear (made of spring aluminum). The only thing that will approach being a ground plane will be the 2x2" keel forward and...

what's the recipe for dense white smoke? by Stealth Pilot
I have a friend who has a fournier motorglider with the most unusual tips. it has quite solid cast aluminium holders top and bottom for pyrotechnics canisters which would give off really dense white smoke. they were like a military smoke grenade in that once ignited they burnt until extinguished....

Bends, kinks and splices by Michael Horowitz
How does an A&P know if he can simply straighten out a longeron or if he's going to have to cut and splice? Obviously if it has a kink in it, it's very weak and would have to be spliced. Is there a reference? In the meanwhile I'll go read AC43.13 and see what they say. .. .. .. .. ..
