I'm sure this is not the answer you want, but others will supply it for
you, for sure. I fly with a map and compass, plus an ancient Trimble Flightmate which gives a heading and nearest airports in an emergency. Also, one of the aircraft I fly jams the Trimble, so I have a Garmin GPS 55, which I bought dirt cheap and played around with it until I figured out its rudiments. People on my airport complain about the fancy Garmins, which they expect a lot out of because they are so pricey. All I need for VFR is a GPS heading and a good chart to keep me out of the wrong airspace. When IFR I'll go to something more sophisticated.
