Default Runway incursions

Thanks for the correction. It looks like I grabbed the URL after it
jumped to the next story.

I was riding in the tailgunner seat of the Evergreen B-17 at PDX during a
volunteer appreciation ride, and we had a similar incursion that caused the
pilot of the bomber to try to go around...he didn't have enough runway so as
soon as he crossed the 28R he slammed on the brakes. The left main brake
locked up, the tail skidded and the whole back of the airplane filled with
burned rubber smoke.

That was surreal...one second I'm having the time of my life in solitude on
the little bicycle seat in the back of a B-17 (facing backward), bummed that
the ride is almost over, and the next thing I know we're skidding sideways,
I'm getting banged up against the plexiglass and there's smoke everywhere.
Then, just as quickly the pilot regained control and took it to the south
hangar as if nothing happened.

They had cleared a commuter jet to land or take off on the crossing runway.
I'm not sure which but I saw him go overhead as we started to skid. That
was in 1996, I think.
