One should slow down and climb in rising air to maximize the benefit from
the lift, and put the nose down in sink to break through quickly and
minimize the loss. Flying straight and level has you do exactly the
opposite - resulting in a slower average air speed and increased fuel
consumption over a trip.


Not only that one of the benefits of flying VFR is I DON'T have to fly
straight and level.
