"Whiskey" for compass? by dale
Anybody got a replacement for the kerosene looking fluid in the whiskey compass? It evaporates or leaks over the period of a year with no outside evidence of a leak. The compass has new gaskets. Interested in something a little thicker.

Free Volksplane to good home, located in Chino Hills CA by Bryan Zinn
I have an aircraft in my possession which I am interested in donating to a good home. Tax write off would be nice, but it isn't critical. Taker would need to pick the aircraft up in Chino Hills CA. Wings and tailplane are currently removed, so it would easily fit onto a flatbed. The plane is in...

Hinges under stress - mechanical engineering type question by Corrie
Thinking about a hinge like this (end view): ____(O)____ where "___" is the plate, "( )" is the barrel, and "O" is the hinge pin. It would be bolted through the plates to the surface below. The barrel sits "on top" of the plates. Hope that makes sense. It's in tension and/or compression (some...

Double covering fabric covered wings by [email protected]
I just found out about a method being used by some experimenters to cover their wings that is intriguing. They are literally covering the wings twice with fabric. The technique involves covering the wing initially with a heavy grade fabric, taughten it with the iron as specified, apply the rib...

Jim Weir - desulfating battery charger by Ernest Christley
Jim, that was an excellent article in last month's kit plane. I'll be getting the parts together to build one here shortly. There was also a nice article in Sport Aviation (for a change), that actually showed how to build something. In this case a battery desulfator. The question is, how...

Doug Fir vs: Sitka Spruce by Lou Parker
Can anyone tell me the truth? When I read articles about the difference between the two woods, the information says that fir is 23% stronger than spruce. When I talk to people they say only 10%. Anyone got a handle on this? Lou

V8 fuel flow by Robert Bates
I was reading on a site about someone running a Chevy LS1 that was derated to 320hp and bone stock that was running 10.9 gal/hr at cruise. Does anyone have experience with these engines? If it is accurate, that is quite a savings over Lycoming and Continentals of that HP.

Modifying Vision plans for retractable gear... by Chris
Dear All: I am researching various options for a homebuilt aircraft. I am located in Thailand, and over here labor is significantly more obtainable than money, so cost is definitely a primary concern. Build time can always be compensated for by enlisting help. Based on what I want, it appears that...

The Piper Cubs That Weren't by Veeduber
It was olive drab with a big white star on the fuselage and looked like a Piper Cub but wasn't. I had all the trading cards from Wings cigaret packs and the aircraft recognition silhouetted cards they'd passed out at school and I could tell a Mustang from a Messerschmidtt quicker than anybody...

I know I haven't posted in here in about forever, and I'm (sadly) no further along in this project than the "gathered most materials, still doing last-minute-design" stage, but I need to ask a couple plywood questions: First, I'm guessing that marine plywood was used in the construction of the...
