Dear Burt by

Thought this was an opportunity to start what might be an interesting
thread regarding soaring instruction. Using your aside as a
springboard, I'll ask the group: "Is soaring instruction adequate to
produce safe, knowledgable soaring pilots." I bring this up, first to
echo Burt's observation of the...

New House Thermal by
[email protected]
The Treasure Coast Soaring Club will soon have a new house thermal. Florida Power And Light is in the process of building a 400 acre solar power plant within 3/4 mile from our airport. Heat from this type of farm should make for a great house thermal. Anyone out there with experience flying over...

RIP Matt Wright (Balleka on YouTube) by
Stephan van den Berg
Dreadful news coming from the UK today. Matt Wright (Balleka on YouTube) was tragically killed in a mid-air whilst flying his glider this weekend. I believe he collided with a power plane.
I'm sure we have all watched some of Matt's videos on YouTube over and over. He will be sorely missed.
RIP...

ASW20 or LS6 by
binks
I am looking to purchase my first glider. I have been looking at the
ASW20 and the LS6. Any suggestions on which glider would be the best
all around? I have heard that the LS6 has a narrow cockpit. I am 6'2"
200 lbs. and would be wearing a parachute. Also heard that the ASW20
can be a little...

SSA responds to ANPRM by
David Kinsell[_2_]
No one has commented yet on the SSA response? Likely to be the biggest
impact to soaring in the U.S. in many many years. On the SSA site if you
haven't seen it yet. Maybe pilots flying out of lower states just don't
worry about it.
I was very happy to see it posted a week before the...

Houston JS1c crash ONLY (not in any way about a Puchaczs, or anything else!) by
Sean Fidler
For the love of god, please discuss no other subjects here but the JS1 and this very sad accident.
Do we even know that this accident involved a spin yet? Any factual information? Did anyone see it spinning? It easily could have been a medical or a structural failure or rigging issue, etc? ...

Human factors RECKLESSNESS by
private
My apologies to the Usenet police cross posting but
I am in mourning for friends lost, and in sympathy for the families they
left alone.
This week we have seen behavior that can only be described as reckless.

Seminole Lake Gliderport for sale by
Burt Compton - Marfa Gliders, west Texas
Just saw this advert in Barnstormers.com
The nicest gliderport in the USA in my opinion. The swimming pool makes it so.

Rich Owen: Please reply if anything about the advert is not true.

Open Discussion; Creating XC pilots by
SoaringXCellence
All,
I presented at the SSA conference this last winter on the efforts of our club to build XC soaring pilots. This has been an emphasis for me for many years (hence my moniker SoaringXCellence), to the point I went and personally bought a G103 just so I could provide the training (since been...

Winch Launch Safety Study by
[email protected]
In the recent Aerokurier, there is a very good 2 part article on winch
safety, which I think everyone should read who is interested in winch
launches. I read it in the hard cover version in German, so I don't
know if an online version is available.
The main takeaways for me are the following...

Finish lines by
Thomas Knauff
Accidents have ocurred when a pilot performs a high speed, low level finish
along the centerline of the runway, or over the airport, then fails to
control the aircraft properly and crashes. In some cases, these displays
have influenced other pilots who do not have the experience or skills...

Sorry, eh? I am sorry to interrupt your normally highly productive use of the internet. But your glider is at risk.
It is only time separating you from the obvious damage coming to your aircraft soon. When I bought my first glass ship, the competition letters had been applied with EXTENSIVE use of...
