IFR Checkride Scheduled by
Jon Kraus
I have my IFR checkride scheduled for April 21st... To make it even more
exciting my CFII talked me into taking my ride with a DE that is getting
his certification for giving instrument checkrides... So not only will
he be there but a representative from the FAA will be riding along
critiquing...

Lightspeed with Foggles question by
Rod Madsen
I just bought the Hood Lamb and had to send them back. They simply would
not clamp to my David Clark H10-13.4 which have a narrower than usual band.
To their credit, they acknowledge this problem with DC's and suggest
friction tape to increase the girth of the band. Didn't work...to
rinky-dink...

Making a VFR C152 IFR by
Paul Folbrecht
I've just purchased a '79 152 that is currently VFR only. Avionics
consist of a single nav/com and xponder. That's it.
At some point in the next year or two I am going to want to get my
instrument ticket in this aircraft, so I'm already starting to think
about the best way to do that. Trouble...

CAT IIIC minimums by
Andrey Serbinenko
A question: the landing minimums section for ILS CAT-III approaches
may have separate lines for A, B, and C. In some cases the C line
has an "NA" for visibility, and on some other plates the whole C
line is missing. So, what's the difference? Does "NA" mean "not
authorized", i.e. CAT-IIIC cannot be...

Jepp no longer in the GA business...? by
John Harper
I went to get my new IFR charts today and my local pilot shop told me they
will no longer be carrying Jepp products. I know that some places have
already stopped, but at PAO/RHV they thought up until a few days ago that
they would be able to carry on.
Seems someone at Jepp has had the brilliant...

Visual STARs by
Mxsmanic
If a STAR is marked VISUAL (FUBAR VISUAL APPROACH), and shows
hand-drawn paths and landmarks instead of navaids, does that mean it's
intended specifically for VFR, or for both VFR and IFR, or what? I'm
a bit confused by it because I thought all STARs were instrument
approaches. At the same time,...

PC flight sim for training? by
ivo welch
I have started on practical IFR training in the real world. (Vans
RV-9, hopefully RV-10 soon; mostly glass cockpit.) I do ok on
precision flying, but I would definitely like to practice patterns,
approaches, etc., at home before I go. just too few approaches per
training hour.
Fortunately, it...

Unusual attitude recovery advice sought by
Eamon McKinley
Hello everyone,
I'm about a week away from taking my instrument checkride, but I'm
lacking in one area I thought would be a breeze. After spending months
practicing holds, approaches & arcs I was double-checking the PTS and
realised that we had not practised unusual attitudes. My CFII told me
they...

Video of VOR A approach into MBO in actual by
A Lieberman
I took a friend up (VFR pilot) to give him a taste of what instrument
flying was about. We did two ILS's over at JAN (Jackson MS) and then a VOR
Alpha back to MBO (Madison MS).
I briefed him that it may be a possibility we may not be able to return to
MBO as ceilings on departure were 700 feet. ...

Weird Indications on Aspen EFD1000/Garmin 430W by
Evan Salant
I was flying the ILS 06 approach on my plane equipt with an Aspen and
Garmin 430. I had the Garmin set up for vectors to final, tuned
properly, set on VLOC, station identified and was flying near the OM
towards the FAF. Then I noticed the Aspen said "BC1", was reverse
sensing, and showing no...

KRMN ILS 33- Interesting Approach by
Brad Z

I haven't come across an approach with two separate missed approach
procedures before. Is this even remotely common?
I think I'll add this to my instrument students' training regiment due to
some additional interesting features- teardrop course...

Localizer Back Course vs. ILS by
ilsub
Hello.
My home base airport (KOSU) has ILS 9R approach and NDB 27L approach.
My question is,
Can they have Localizer Back Course 27L?
I am wondering if the signal is always avaialble on the reverse
side of Localizer. Or should there be something extra to have
Localizer back course?
I tested the...

Unclear Clearance by

OK, just to distract you guys from "IFR with a VFR GPS" ---
Flying into Grand Marais MN last week (KCKC) I was out maybe
30 miles at 7000 and got "Cleared for the approach, maintain
4000 until established. Contact advisory ... "
The reason for the early clearance was, I think, that I was

ILS question by
Chris Brooks
I am training in the maryland area. I was cleared for an ILS approach to
runway 27 at HGR the other day.
Here is a plate:
http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0406/05114I27.PDF
I was about 17 miles out at 5000 feet when I got cleared for the approach.
My question is, when can I descend to 4000 feet?
Anyone?
