A gaggle of questions about traning from an old geezer... by
SimGuy
Hello everyone,
After gaining by ticket in 1993 at KOAK my logbook was moth-balled and
I haven't flown again until last month. After regaining currency I
would like to try and ascend through the tiers and maybe, one day,
hold a Commercial License with Instrument rating. I currently have 85
hours...

"View Limiting Device" recommendations please by
[email protected]
I've been working on that elusive instrument rating for awhile now,
but I still haven't come up with a very good solution for my view
limiting device.
I need to wear glasses for reading (charts), but otherwise I see just
fine. I wear progressive lenses (for presbyopia) that vary from a
diopter of...

Realistic Instrument Training using MSFS 2004 by
[email protected]
Hi All,
I'm a longtime lurker here, but now I have a question I hope the group
can help me with. I am working toward my instrument rating (21 hours
so far), and want to use MSFS to practice (cheaply). I do fine with
holding a heading, but I find it very difficult to maintain an
altitude. The...

VFR to IFR Cost for KLN 89B by
Skip Guimond
I recently purchased an aircraft with a KLN 89B installed with VFR
restrictions. Can anyone give me a "guesstimate" on the cost of
adding the necessary equipment and labor to have the unit certified
for IFR flight?
Thanks--
Skip Guimond

Changes to Aircraft Approach Categories?! by
skyliner
I've been away from this newsgroup for quite some time, so forgive me if
this has already been covered.
The other day, one of my colleagues pointed out something I hadn't noticed
in the latest set of approach plates, which came out at the end of December.
Its on page A2, under "Aircraft Approach...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by
skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup
if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but
often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often
wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a
popup.

I have a recently installed Garmin GPS430. But I also have a Lowrance

awareness than the panelmount. Please understand--I have no complaints
about the 430; it is a great unit. However, the Lowrance 1000 is a

It actually happened today!! Vacuum failure in IMC. by

Departed Asheville NC today into IMC enroute to Columbia SC. Well into
IMC and about 6500 MSL the DG started to slowly just start rotating and
the AI started to lean over. Backup vacuum-no help. I couldn't
believe this was happening in IMC; I only fly it about 5% of the time.
Columbia was just a...

Question on airplane's IFR capability by
Slav Inger
I'm planning on transitioning from a PA-28-181 to Diamond models (DA20C1
and then to DA40). I'd like to use the DA40 for longer trips and DA20
for putzing around the airport practicing IFR approaches, possibly in
IMC. There isn't a question as to DA40's IFR capability, but I'm
running into a bit...

Should I file to an intersection? by
Slav Inger
Hi all,
Question: take a look at the VOR Rwy 28 approach at Marshall Brooks
field (RMY). I've filed IFR to airports where the VOR IAF happened to
be the VOR which was no problem, I'd just have that VOR be the last
fix in the route box on flight plan form. In RMY's case, the IAF
appears to be...

Logging instrument approaches by

It's been awhile since I flew VFR, and having taken a cursory look
through Part 61 I didn't see anything to the contrary, so I'm going to
throw this out and see what you guys think. It's my understanding that
I can take a VFR-only airplane on a local VFR trip with a PP-rated
safety pilot on board,...
