Asymmetrical thurst by
Jim Carter[_1_]
Watching the videos of the heavies crabbing to a landing in high cross winds
prompts me to ask: why don't they use asymmetrical thrust instead of
kicking it straight in the flare?
Even in a single, why don't we see more forward slips to a landing instead
of crab, kick, and pray?
Have these...

Trimble TL1000 GPS Questions by
Jim Carter[_1_]
I can't seem to find any significant data on the web about this panel
mounted GPS. Even Southeast Avionics website has very little information
about the Trimble product line and they usually are an excellent
reference point. Does anyone still use this GPS and are current
databases still available?...

GNS430 vs. GX60 - missing functions by
Jim Carter[_1_]
This question particularly applies to the CAP mission pilots in the group:
we have been flying GX50 and 60s in our CAP birds, but I'm playing with
a GNS430 in a private aircraft. There doesn't seem to be a correlation of
the SAR functions in Garmin's unit like Apollo's.
I'd like to know how...

Downers Grove, Il - suggestions? by
Jim Carter[_1_]
I need to go to Downers Grove the week and am considering taking a 182RG from the local FBO here in Bentonville. I thought Schaumburg Regional might be close, but it shows OTS indefinitely on the web site I use. Next choice might appear to be Dupage. Anyone from around their with some suggestions?...

Brand new rating, starting school for real now... by
Jim Harper
Hi all.
Just got back from a Doug Carmody class...www.safepilot.com. Intensive
week, came with 20 hours, and finished up with a checkride today.
Great course, heavy in a very advanced simulator...no motion, but
great visuals. Can't say enough good about the experience, and if
anybody asks I will...

Commercial 250nm VFR flight - all 3 landings on the same day? by
Jim Macklin
The long flight does NOT have to be on the same day, it is
acceptable to have a stop, but it must be as it says below
landings at three places, with one a straight
line of 250 NM. I would log the flight as stages, with the
citation of 61.129 in the remarks, with notes that it was a...

Motion LS800 table HD failure at 14,000 feet by
Jim Macklin
You may want to check with a computer hardware group, but
here are my comments.
Hard drives fly the read/write head on the air cushion over
the platters. As the air gets thinner at altitude, the head
crashes.
You may be able to find hardware rated for altitudes up to
FL180 or even higher. ...

Vents are not installed in the direct impact slipstream, so
ice is not usually a problem in a well designed system.
