What's a battery mat? And won't fiberglass tend to mat down after a while?

|
Battery mat is fiberglass treated to neutralize battery acid, usually
placed in the bottom of the battery box. The fiberglass should not compress as there is no weight on it in an open pan. Funnel idea is prolly best.
