I dont see why it would be illegal. However I will point out one thing I
noticed in the rules that caught my attention: "In the event enough tickets are not sold to cover the costs of the prizes, C.O.P.S. will post this information on its web site along with a form to request your donation to be refunded (minus a ten percent handling fee) The grand prize will be a 2006 Cirrus SR-20G2." So, if they dont get $300,000.00 worth of ticket buyers, they automatically collect 10% of everything regardless, and you are stuck with the hassle of getting back your $90.00 per ticket. It would nice to win, but I have to admit that I would just sell it and use the proceeds to put down on a house. -- John Huthmaker PPL-SEL P-28-161 http://www.cogentnetworking.com "Len" wrote in message ... Hey- I found a web site where they are raffling off a Cirrus SR-20G2 in August. Tickets cost $100, are most likely tax deductible. Proceeds benefit Police Survivors. Check out: http://cops-cirrus.easystorecreator.com/store.asp Anyone know if this is legit? It would be nice to win a cirrus for $100. I bet the taxes on the winner will be a bit steep though. The ticket coasts would not be tax decductible - and in the remote
chance you won, you'd get to pay federal & state tax on your winnings (possibly based on list price?). What's left you would get to put down on a house...... I wonder what fraction of the US aircraft are sold as raffle or sweepstakes winners. Somehow, I consider that a real indictment of the value of aircraft. A friend said "lotteries are a tax extracted from those that don't understand or refuse to recognize the laws of probability" |
